Looking Backward to Go Forward

Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits.

There is wisdom in looking back to where you are coming from. This may seem contradictory for many who view looking back as a hindrance to progressing towards God’s plans for you (Insert Lot’s Wife Here). The truth is though that there is wisdom in looking back to where you are coming from. In Exodus 12:21-27 God commands the children of Israel to remember the Passover with a feast throughout their generations.

Why would He command such a thing? Why would He want them to remember what He had done for them (deliver them out of Egypt)? I recently celebrated my birthday. In the spirit of growing and reaching yet another milestone in the journey of my life I was led to look back to where I am coming from. I was reminded of just how much I have grown.

My eyes were opened to see that I am not the same girl I was five years or even a year ago. I was reminded of His faithfulness in seeing me through the difficult times of yesterday which bolstered my faith to face the difficult situations of tomorrow. I realized just how much God is moving in my life and how much work He is doing in and through me. With one look back over the ground I have travelled thus far I realized just how far I have come in this journey. My love and passion for the Lord was rekindled when I saw His goodness towards me over the years (Revelations 2:4-5).

” With one look back over the ground I have travelled thus far I realized just how far I have come in this journey.”

My faith was bolstered when I saw His constant faithfulness towards me and I gained confidence in myself when I saw just how much I have grown over the years. I believe in the mundane of our busy schedules the devil can deceive us to forget all that the Lord has been doing in our lives. In so doing we forget His goodness and faithfulness towards us. We may even lose our way and become stuck exactly like the children of Israel in the wilderness. They constantly forgot the faithfulness of God in the past and so had no faith to believe Him to be faithful in the future (Numbers 14:1-4).

if you take the moment to remind yourself of what the lord has already done you will see His faithful goodness.

Be encouraged beloved. Today it may seem as if you are not progressing. It may even seem as if the Lord has forgotten your name but if you take the moment to remind yourself of what the lord has already done you will see His faithful goodness leading you home. You will see that you have come a long way and will continue to move forward. You will gain confidence in the work God is doing in and through you. So go ahead and take a look back.
